Before you book

What to check before you book a courier

Measure and weigh it properly

Couriers price on size as well as weight, so a light but bulky box can cost more than you expect. Measure the packed item, not the item on its own, and give those figures when you get a quote.

Ask what the cover really is

Ask the courier how much cover comes with the price, and whether anything is left out. Standard cover can be low, and some items may be excluded altogether, so check the terms before you send anything valuable.

Check what can't be sent

Carriers have their own lists of restricted items, and some goods, such as batteries, aerosols and chemicals, can count as dangerous goods. Royal Mail's restricted items page gives a feel for the kind of thing to look out for, and your courier will have their own list.

Pack it for the journey

Use a strong box, fill the gaps so nothing moves, and put a label inside as well as outside. It helps your item get there in one piece, and it helps if you ever need to claim.

Ask for proof of delivery

Find out whether you'll get a signature, a photo or a tracking record, and how long it's kept. It's the first thing you'll need if there's a query.

Buying online? Know who's responsible

If you buy from a UK retailer as a consumer, the goods are normally the retailer's responsibility until they reach you. Citizens Advice explains what to do when something goes wrong.

Hiring a heavier vehicle?

Goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes gross plated weight can need an operator's licence if they're used for business. GOV.UK sets out the rules for goods vehicle operators, so check them before you take on that kind of work.
